UK Farmers Assembly on New GM – Online Debate

28/02/21, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A cross section of UK farmers and growers are invited to debate the potential deregulation of genetic modification (GM) in the food system.

The UK Government wants to deregulate genetically modified (GM) crops and animals.

Genetic modification (originally known as genetic engineering and now rebranded as ‘gene editing’) is being promoted as an essential tool in the farmer’s sustainability toolbox. But is the technology really the right tool for sustainable agriculture?

The Assembly’s first meeting will take place on Zoom between 7pm-8.45pm, Sunday 28 February. Participants will hear from speakers with contrasting views and forms of expertise, including those whose knowledge comes from lived experience as food producers and consumers.

Confirmed speakers include:

Andrew Burgess (farmer and Director of Agriculture at Produceworld Ltd)

Jyoti Fernandes (agroecological smallholder ad Director of the Landworkers’ Alliance)

Michael Antoniou (Head of the Gene Expression and Therapy Group, Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics, King’s College London School of Medicine);

George Young (agroecological mixed farmer and blogger)

Pat Thomas from Beyond GM will host proceedings.
