Our Research
Documenting Real-World Farming Practices
We collect in-the-field data from farmers using whole system approaches to livestock and farm health. This includes:
- Case studies of successful natural health solutions
- Surveys exploring farmer experiences and methods
- Field trials of alternative treatments and practices
Why Research Matters
To make a difference, we need to understand what farmers are doing to reduce external inputs and maintain healthy animals, crops and soil. By documenting these approaches, we help farmers learn from one another and influence how health is taught in agricultural education.
We also need to trial and evaluate approaches and practices that can make a difference to other farmers and growers.
Our research uses case studies, surveys, and field trials. To ensure quality, our work is overseen by:
- Dr Lindsay Whistance (Organic Research Centre)
- Amber Lawes-Johnson (UK Food Systems Centre for Doctoral Training)
Get Involved
Are you a farmer or grower using – or keen to try – natural approaches to livestock or crop health?
For example:
- Residue-free alternatives to pour-ons, fly sprays, wormers, flukicides, and pesticides
- Practical methods for disease prevention and building resilience
- Strategies that support fertility, boost yields, and improve birth outcomes
We’re inviting farmers and growers to be part of our in-the-field research – a kind of farmer-led ‘citizen science’. This is a collaborative way to explore what works, through real farm experience, observation, and shared insights.

Share Your Farming Experience and Have Your Say
Farmers’ authentic experiences and insights are essential. Sharing your challenges and successes helps shape best practice for farming in more nature-friendly, health-conscious ways.
Without data, real-life stories stay anecdotal. With your help, we can turn experience into evidence and facilitate knowledge exchange.
If you are using alternative or complementary (CAM) methods, products or practices in livestock care, we invite you to take part in our latest survey:
