Essential Homeopathic Remedies for Livestock Health Problems
I’m Mary Kelly. I’ve been farming since the 1970s – originally with a conventional dairy herd, and organically certified since 2002. My interest in herbs and natural methods eventually led me to the Irish School of Homeopathy, where I graduated in 2017.
Now, as a qualified homeopath I help fellow farmers explore practical, residue-free remedies that support holistic animal health and regenerative farming practices.
Go-To Homeopathic Remedies for Common Livestock Issues
Here are some of the remedies I’ve found most helpful on the farm. These are gentle, non-toxic, and in many cases reduce the need for antibiotics – NB do not attempt to replace antibiotics without veterinary advice. Always ask ‘do I need the vet?’ If you are ever in doubt, call your vet!
| Issue - Symptoms | Remedy & Potency |
|---|---|
| Accident, injury, trauma or exhaustion, including difficult birth | Arnica 200c |
| Anxiety, stress, fear - before and after | Aconite, Arg. Nit, Arsenicum (AAA) |
| First signs of mastitis | Belladonna, Bryonia & Urtica Urens combination (BBU 200c) |
| Early curds in milk (mastitis) | Silicea, Sulphur & Carbo Veg combination (SSC 200c) |
| Support during difficult labour (ring womb, contractions weak) | Pulsatilla 30c Caulophyllum 200c (only during labour) |
| Retained placenta | Aconite 200c, Pulsatilla 30c |
| Foul-smelling retained placenta | Add Pyrogen 200c to the above |
| Blood in milk post-birth | Ipecac or Phosphorus 30c |
| Drying up milk | Urtica Urens 6c |
| Grief/weaning/loss of calf, dam, companion | Ignatia 30c or 200c |
| Digestive issues, bloat, constipation | Nux Vomica 30c |
| Calf diarrhoea | Arsenicum Alb, Veratrum, Merc, Podophyllum |
| Weakness after fluid loss (diarrhoea) | China 30c |
| Gunky eyes | Euphrasia 30c |
| Warts on teats, spine, tail, muzzle | Thuja 30c |
There are hundreds more, but this gives a taste of what’s possible with natural livestock remedies.
Homeopathy isn’t magic – it’s a system of observation, symptom matching, and application. It won’t replace a good vet, but in many cases it can complement and support animal recovery in a chemical free, holistic way.
Real-Life Case: The Bull with the Abscess
Let me share a story. One morning, my husband Gerry spotted a swelling on our bull’s hindquarter. He was eating fine, eyes bright, no lameness or temperature – but the lump got bigger daily.
We brought him in. It was soft, no heat – looked like an abscess. Since there were no alarming symptoms, I reached for Silica 30c, known in homeopathy for abscesses.
What I did:
- Mixed 5 pills in 100ml water + 10ml vodka (preservative).
- Sprayed it on his nose 3 times daily.
- Kept him in a paddock close to the house.
What Happened:
- Day 2: Abscess came to a head, began oozing.
- Day 3–4: Still oozing, but shrinking. Bull in great form.
- Day 6: Completely gone. No fuss, no drugs, no withdrawal period.
This is the kind of practical, low-cost, residue-free healing that excites me. I hope it inspires other farmers to give it a go.
